With an annual scope of research amounting to approximately 80 publicly funded projects per annum and a funding volume of  approximately € 8mn p.a., PTS is one of the large industrial research institutes in Europe. The research objectives are tuned to the needs of industry who take an active role in planning and conducting the projects..

The PTS research objectives are concentrated in the following areas:

• Innovative fibre composites
• Surface upgrading and functionalizing
• Resources management
• Environmentally compatible and sustainable product design

In its research work, PTS employs simulation tools to imitate in simulation models the entire paper development and production process. The development of soft sensors and their integration into the papermaking processes play a key role in the simulation work.

The results of research make it possible to create and develop solutions for new products and processes in the paper value chain. Customer-tailored implementation for individual firms involved in papermaking and converting as well as their supplier industries improves their competitiveness.
